Your sights have a very simple job: to instantly give your eyes the information they need to know when your gun is pefectly lined up with the target.
Old style sights give your eyes such low grade information your mind is forced
to estimate, to guess when your weapon is lined up with the target.
It's like trying to drive at night with a dirty windshield.

The the various dots, gaps and shapes you must evaluate are dark, widely spaced and have no instinctive feel to their pattern.
